Kansas Alabama and UConn Make up the AP Top 25 Preseason Basketball Poll

The Kansas Jayhawks have emerged as the overall champions of the Associated Press Top 25 preseason men's basketball volleyball poll taking the first position on October 14, 2024; they have been ranked first in the preseason for the fifth time. Kansas was picked first by an overwhelming 30 of the national media panel while Alabama and two-time defending national champion #11 UConn were chosen in second and third place with 14 and 11 first-place votes respectively.

This poll paves the way for an interesting 2024-2025 NCAA Basketball season with the stalwarts of the game like Kansas and Alabama besides the new generation teams such as Houston and Iowa State.

AP Top 25 Preseason Rankings:

Kansas (30) – 1,449 points

Alabama (14) – 1,428 points

UConn (11) – 1,345 points

Houston (4) – 1,343 points

Iowa State – 1,177 points

Big Transfers and Key Players:

Kansas’ Bill Self has made some major additions including A.J. Storr, a transfer from Wisconsin, and Zeke Mayo, the transfer from South Dakota State along with the return of such talents as Hunter Dickinson, Dajuan Harris Jr., and KJ Adams Jr. Kansas is in a position, where they have to come off the season that was marred with injuries for the team last year, and they are expected to retain the top spot up to March. 

Alabama, led by All-American guard Mark Sears and standout freshman Jarin Stevenson, is closely chasing Kansas. UConn, the reigning back-to-back champions, is making a historic bid to become the first team since John Wooden’s UCLA to win three consecutive national titles.

Competitive Conferences:

The Big 12 stands out as the most competitive conference, boasting three teams in the top five (Kansas, Houston, Iowa State) and five in the top 10. Meanwhile, the SEC leads in total rankings with nine teams, including Alabama, Auburn (No. 11), Tennessee (No. 12), and Texas A&M (No. 13).

History and Streaks:

  • Kansas has now ranked No. 1 in the preseason five times, only behind North Carolina, Duke, and UCLA in total appearances.
  • Houston holds the longest active streak in the Top 25, appearing for 86 consecutive weeks.
  • Iowa State reached its highest preseason ranking ever at No. 5, while Texas A&M equaled its best ranking at No. 13.
  • Kentucky extended its record with its 57th appearance in the preseason poll, while North Carolina clocked in at No. 9 for its 55th appearance.

Teams on the Rise and Those to Watch:

Beyond the top 10, Purdue (No. 14), Creighton (No. 15), and Arkansas (No. 16) are looking to build on their successes from last season. Meanwhile, Rutgers enters the preseason poll for the first time since 1978, debuting at No. 25 under coach Steve Pikiell.

Teams like Illinois, St. John’s, and Xavier were just outside the rankings but are expected to make waves this season, with the first regular-season poll scheduled for November 11.
